Somatic Therapy: For When Your Body Already Told You And You Didn't Listen

Who It's For

This is for you if your body has been sending signals for years — the clenched jaw, the shallow breathing, the shoulders that live near your ears, the exhaustion sleep doesn't touch — and you've been talking your way past all of it instead of listening. If you're the person who runs on adrenaline until your body finally forces a stop, somatic work starts before that stop happens.

The Problem This Helps With

Stress and trauma that live in the body and don't resolve through insight alone — chronic tension, a nervous system stuck in high alert, physical symptoms with no clear medical cause, or the sense of being disconnected from your own body because staying in your head has felt safer for years.

What EMDR Is

Somatic therapy treats the body as a source of information, not just a place where stress happens to land. Instead of only talking about what's wrong, we track what's happening in your body in real time — tension, breath, posture, the urge to brace or collapse — and work directly with that. This often reaches material that talking alone can't touch, because for many of my clients, the body learned to override its own signals long before the mind did. Somatic work helps reverse that.

Somatic Therapy: For When Your Body Already Told You

You understand what's stressing you out but your body won't let go of it. Somatic therapy targets the tension and bracing your nervous system holds onto even after your mind has moved on.

This approach helps when physical tension feels constant, and overriding your body's signals has become your default way to keep functioning.

Why Somatic Therapy Works Differently

Somatic work tracks sensation, breath, and posture in real time, helping your nervous system finally complete the stress response it's been stuck holding instead of releasing.

SOMATIC THERAPY: WHEN YOUR BODY KEEPS SCORE

Who Benefits from Somatic Therapy

This therapy suits those who can name the stress in their life but feel disconnected from how it lives in their body. You notice the clenched jaw, the shallow breathing, the exhaustion sleep doesn't touch — but talking about it hasn't changed it. If you're a nurse, healthcare worker, or a woman who's endured prolonged stress and burnout, somatic work often reaches what talk therapy alone hasn't.

Chronic tension and bracing can keep your nervous system stuck in high alert, showing up as physical symptoms with no clear medical cause or a body that reacts before your mind catches up. Somatic therapy targets these stored patterns directly to reduce their ongoing impact.

Somatic therapy tracks what's happening in your body as it happens — tension, breath, posture, the urge to brace or collapse. This process helps your body finally process what it's been holding, without requiring you to narrate every detail verbally.

What Sessions Look Like

Guided Emotional Processing, At Your Pace

Sessions include noticing and naming physical sensation as it arises, gentle movement or breathwork where useful, and building your capacity to stay present with sensation instead of automatically overriding it. This isn't a fitness or relaxation session — it's targeted, and it can bring up more than expected, which we move through together at a pace that respects your nervous system's limits. Sessions run 50 minutes, via telehealth.

If your body's been trying to tell you something for a while, book a free consult and let's finally listen to it together.

Have Any Question?

  • Can somatic therapy be done over telehealth?

Yes, with adaptations — body awareness, breathwork, and movement cues translate well to video. Available across Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, and Manitoba.

  • I've tried therapy before and it didn't help. Why would somatic therapy help??

Physical symptoms — chronic tension, sleep disruption, unexplained exhaustion — often persist after talk therapy because they live below conscious thought. Somatic work engages the body directly, which is frequently why it reaches what conversation alone hasn't.

  • What's the difference between somatic therapy and something like massage or physiotherapy?

Massage and physiotherapy address the body's physical structure. Somatic therapy uses body awareness as a doorway into psychological and nervous system patterns — it's a therapeutic process, not a bodywork treatment, though the two can complement each other.

  • Do I need to be comfortable talking about my body to try this?

No. Most clients start disconnected from their body's signals — that disconnection is part of what we work with, not a barrier to starting.
