5 Things Nursing Taught Me About Burnout (That Suck)

Nursing burnout is a chronic state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress in the healthcare environment. It results in deep cynicism, a loss of empathy, and a diminished sense of personal accomplishment, often requiring professional intervention like somatic therapy or EMDR for true recovery.

Ah, the glamour of nursing. If you’ve ever found yourself contemplating the structural integrity of a supply closet floor while a patient’s family member screams about their lukewarm turkey sandwich, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Before I became a therapist, I was right there with you—scrubs too tight, bladder too full, and a soul that felt like it had been through a woodchipper.

We talk about burnout in healthcare like it’s a temporary state of being “a bit tired,” but for those of us in the trenches, it’s a total system failure. It’s the moment you realize you’ve forgotten what it feels like to have a personality that doesn't revolve around a MAR (Medication Administration Record) or a call light. My transition from the bedside to the therapy couch wasn't just a career move; it was an evacuation. And what I learned in that supply closet is something they never teach you in nursing school: your “giver” has a limited battery life, and you’ve been running on 1% for three years.

What does nursing burnout actually feel like?

If you ask a textbook, nursing burnout is defined by three dimensions: exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. If you ask a real nurse, it feels like wanting to cry because the printer jammed, but being too dehydrated to actually produce tears. It’s a specific kind of soul-weariness that sleep cannot fix.

When you are experiencing nurse burnout symptoms , the world loses its color. You aren't just tired; you’re “I might drive past my house and just keep going until I hit the ocean” tired. This isn't just a physical sensation; it’s a neurological response to being in a constant state of high-alert. Your nervous system is perpetually fried, leaving you feeling like a live wire that’s about to snap.

Common signs of this state include:

  • Chronic Irritability: You find yourself rolling your eyes at things that used to make you feel compassionate.
  • Physical Ailments: Unexplained back pain, headaches, or the
